A recent study indicates that the estimated direct and indirect costs of obesity to the U.S. Obesity causes approximately 300,000 deaths each year in the U.S. For example, more than 60% of adults in the United States are overweight, and over one-third are obese. Despite the high importance of lifestyle in disease risks, in recent years, unhealthy lifestyle has been adopted by an increasing portion of the population. In contrast, some lifestyle related factors, such as diet, weight control, and tobacco smoking, comprise risks of stroke, colon cancer, coronary heart disease and Type 2 diabetes by 70%–90%. It has also been reported that environmental pollutions, indoor and outdoor types combined, account only for 7%–10% of all disease risks. It has been estimated, for the chronic diseases as a whole, between 70% and 90% of the disease risks are associated with lifestyle and environmental factors. It has been well recognized that lifestyle and environmental factors, including diet, physical activity, living environment, social interaction, etc., play an essential role in human health.
